<dc:description>
This external CSV dataset contains the microhabitat profiles and structural measurements recorded for 117 active sympatric colonies across a latitudinal and elevational transect in Santander, Colombia. Species identity is specified under the Species column, which comprises A. cephalotes (n = 56), A. laevigata (n = 58), and three colonies designated as U (n = 3), denoting individuals of ambiguous micro-habitat x morphology that could not be confidently classified to the species level in the field; these three unclassified colonies were included in the raw metadata for transparency but were systematically excluded from downstream species-specific statistical analyses. Column headers are defined as follows: Num_Col represents the unique numerical identifier assigned to each sampled nest; Location denotes the specific geographic site of collection (spanning 12 distinct sampling localities); Date_Fieldwork indicates the exact date of data collection; and Species identifies the target organism. Structural parameters include mound Length (cm), Width (cm), and Number_Active_Holes. Although Number_Active_Holes was ultimately excluded from downstream statistical modelling. Micro-climatic and edaphic axes consist of Out_Temp (°C; ambient external temperature), In_Temp (°C; internal mound temperature at ~10 cm depth), and Soil_pH. Canopy structural metrics are represented by Time_Photo (the exact timestamp of canopy image capture) and Photo_File (the high-resolution hemispherical photograph filename used to calculate canopy openness). In all main text analyses and figures, the calculated values derived from these hemispherical photographs are referred to as Canopy Openness (%), corresponding to the raw Light_Percentage values presented herein. Environmental background states are qualified under Sky (visual assessment of cloud cover parameters during sampling).

(CSV)
</dc:description>
