This foundational review helped to define the field of PEM POCUS by establishing standard reporting guidelines and summarizing the body of literature at that time with respect to strengths, limitations, and guidance on future research investigations. The evidence for PEM POCUS has evolved significantly over the past decade since that review, with more prospective studies being published.
