<dc:description><p>Coral reef degradation is accelerating worldwide under climate change compounded by local pressures, resulting in increased interest from reef-dependent communities in actively implementing coral reef restoration approaches. Despite deep motivation, both practical challenges and scientific unknowns often constrain progress, reducing effectiveness of ecological, social and/or economic outcomes of restoration activities. The Coral Nurture Program (CNP), a partnership between researchers, tourism operators, and Traditional Owners established on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) in 2018, offers lessons and practical strategies for stewardship-based coral reef restoration at economically, culturally, and ecologically important reef locations. Under a framework spanning science, reef steward operational expertise, and Indigenous knowledge, CNP implemented a phased approach combining coral propagation and planting, monitoring, restoration science, financing pathways, workforce development, and community engagement. Activity commenced with a single tourism operator at one GBR site and progressively expanded across additional partners, regions, and sites. Throughout this expansion, tools, workflows, and governance structures were iteratively optimised to embed coral restoration science and practice within routine tourism operations. We describe the evolution of CNP for delivering community-led, science-informed practice, and discuss the key challenges, lessons-learned and enablers that could be transferable to other stewardship-based restoration initiatives.</p></dc:description>
