<dc:description>
This study assessed the climate impact of the defurring section of the Anagada Livestock Market, Federal Capital Territory, Nigeria, by quantifying greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Primary data were collected through direct field observations and structured interviews, while greenhouse gas emissions were estimated using a derived emission factor based on the IPCC carbon conversion procedure. Results showed that the livestock slaughter and processing unit and the defurring section were exclusively operated by male workers, with waste passenger car tyres serving as the fuel source for livestock defurring. A total of 391,367 goats and cattle were processed annually using 40,472 passenger car tyres weighing 566,615 kg, resulting in estimated annual greenhouse gas emissions of 1,558,192 kgCO₂e (1,558.2 tCO₂e). If current operational practices continue, cumulative greenhouse gas emissions are projected to reach 31,163,840 kgCO₂e (31,163.84 tCO₂e) by 2046. The rainy season accounted for the highest emissions due to increased livestock processing activities. The findings demonstrate that the continued use of waste passenger car tyres for livestock defurring constitutes a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions and establishes the defurring section of the Anagada Livestock Market as a high-emission livestock processing environment with implications for climate change, air quality, occupational health, and livelihoods. The study concludes that immediate interventions are required to eliminate waste passenger car tyre burning from livestock processing operations. It recommends the adoption of complete skin removal (flaying) as an interim emission mitigation measure, the modernization of the processing facility, and the long-term transformation of the processing unit into a model climate-smart livestock processing facility through the adoption of clean, energy-efficient technologies, sustainable livestock processing practices, and gender-responsive approaches to promote emissions mitigation and enhance inclusive participation.

</dc:description>
