<dc:description>Introduction
Research on aquaculture value chains has expanded in recent years, yet limited attention has been given to how local stakeholders visually perceive and represent these systems. This study investigated how local actors conceptualized the Oreochromis niloticus (tilapia) value chain in the Itamarati Rural Settlement, Ponta Porã, Brazil, through participatory co-design activities focused on the “water-to-plate” journey.
Methods
More than 150 participants, including family farmers, rural youth, extension workers, researchers, and community members, participated in the workshops. Although the participatory process extended beyond the production of handmade drawings, the analytical dataset consisted of 31 voluntarily produced drawings. These drawings were analyzed using an inductive mixed-methods approach combining qualitative coding and descriptive quantitative analysis. Independent coding by multiple analysts was used to identify recurring variables represented in the drawings.
Results
Eleven recurring variables were identified. The most frequently represented elements were local and regional markets (77.4%), presence of people (77.4%), subsistence fish farming (48.4%), and school meals (38.7%). In contrast, cooperatives, public policies, technical assistance, water reuse, and technological innovation were less frequently represented.
Discussion
The findings suggest that participants primarily perceived the tilapia value chain through community-oriented and socially embedded relationships, whereas institutional and technological dimensions had lower visual visibility. The study highlights the potential of participatory visual methodologies to support territorial diagnosis, institutional learning, participatory governance, and sustainable rural development in family-based aquaculture systems.
</dc:description>
