<dc:description>
This dataset provides global monthly estimates of potential nitrogen supply (N), potential phosphorus supply(P), and integrated potential nutrient supply at 0.5° spatial resolution from 2001 to 2020.

Potential nutrient supply was estimated using monthly heterotrophic respiration (Rh) normalized by soil organic carbon (SOC) stock (Rh/SOC) as a proxy for microbially mediated soil organic carbon turnover. This turnover proxy was then multiplied by soil total nitrogen and soil organic phosphorus concentrations to estimate potential N and P supply, respectively. Integrated potential nutrient supply was further derived by comparing the potential N:P supply ratio with a spatially varying leaf N:P stoichiometric reference. Following Liebig’s law of the minimum, the nutrient in shorter supply relative to this vegetation stoichiometric reference defined the integrated potential nutrient supply.

Each NetCDF file contains the following variables:

PS_Nutrient_Neq
: integrated potential nutrient supply expressed in N-equivalent units, with units of
mg N kg⁻¹ soil month⁻¹
.

PS_Nutrient_Peq
: integrated potential nutrient supply expressed in P-equivalent units, with units of
mg P kg⁻¹ soil month⁻¹
.

PS_N
: potential nitrogen supply estimated from the Rh/SOC turnover proxy and soil total N concentration, with units of
mg N kg⁻¹ soil month⁻¹
.

PS_P
: potential phosphorus supply estimated from the Rh/SOC turnover proxy and soil organic P concentration, with units of
mg P kg⁻¹ soil month⁻¹
.

yyyymm
: calendar year and month in
YYYYMM
format.

The dataset includes two Rh-based versions: (1) MiCASA-based potential nutrient supply (2001–2020) and (2) CASA-GFED3-based potential nutrient supply (2001–2020). The native CASA-GFED3 record covers 2003–2017. For years outside this period, CASA-GFED3-based potential nutrient supply was reconstructed using grid-cell-specific regression relationships between CASA-GFED3-based and MiCASA-based potential nutrient supply over their common period. Reconstruction was performed only for grid cells with R2 > 0.3, which accounted for 92% of valid grid cells; the median R2 among these grid cells was 0.83. Grid cells not meeting this criterion were retained as missing values outside the native CASA-GFED3 period.Any negative Rh values were set to zero before calculating the turnover proxy and potential nutrient supply.

Soil organic carbon and soil total nitrogen were derived from SoilGrids 2.0 for the upper 0–30 cm soil layer. Soil organic phosphorus was derived from the global soil phosphorus fraction dataset of He et al. (2023), with organic P represented as the sum of labile and moderately labile organic P pools. Spatially varying leaf N:P ratios were derived from the global leaf-trait maps of Moreno-Martínez et al. (2018) and aggregated to the 0.5° analysis grid.
</dc:description>
