<dc:description><p dir="ltr">Imagine a morning on campus. You are sitting in your Intensive Listening class,\r\nearpieces plugged into your ears, and English-language audio begins to flow. This time, it is not\r\na dialogue about a restaurant in London or the subway in New York. The voice\r\ntells a story about pela gandong — about how two villages in Maluku are bound as siblings\r\nacross religions, across islands, and even across languages. Your ears may still be struggling\r\nto catch every word. But your head immediately nods. You know what pela is.\r\nYou have heard stories about gandong from your grandfather or grandmother in the village. Suddenly,\r\nEnglish no longer feels like a high wall. It becomes a window. You are\r\nlearning to listen, and at the same time, you are nurturing the roots of your own culture.\r\nThat is the spirit of this textbook. This lecture note was not written to make you even more confused\r\nby foreign terms. It was written with one simple conviction: anyone can\r\nunderstand listening studies if they are explained as someone would tell a story. We\r\nwrite it while imagining your face — a student who may be encountering the term schema theory\r\nfor the first time, who may still feel nervous listening to foreign speakers' accents, and who one day\r\nwill stand in front of a class as a teacher, lecturer, researcher,\r\nor English-language practitioner.\r\nWe also wrote this from the perspective of non-native speakers. We\r\nbelieve that you do not need to imitate a British or American accent to become\r\na good listener. What you need is the ability to grasp meaning amid the diversity of accents,\r\ncultures, and contexts. That is why we have placed the chapter on Global\r\nEnglishes and intercultural competence as an important part, not\r\nan optional supplement.</p></dc:description>
