<dc:description>
In recent years, Mansfield’s child characters have become a blossoming field of research. However, existing scholarship tends to use Mansfield’s stories of childhood as an avenue through which to examine broader themes. Scholars rarely examine how Mansfield constructed her depictions of childhood. Further, the essential relationship between childhood and siblinghood in Mansfield’s work remains entirely overlooked. Sibling relationships are often our longest, spanning both childhood and adulthood, and our most complicated, being often both intensely close and incredibly fraught. For those with siblings, childhood is fundamentally entangled with the siblings with whom it was shared. Katherine Mansfield’s 1915 story “The Wind Blows” has sibling characters – Matilda and Bogey – who “stride like one” unified being. Similarly, siblings and childhood “stride like one” across Mansfield’s oeuvre. This thesis will examine the role of siblings in Mansfield’s innovative, accurate and nuanced depictions of children and childhood through close examination of twelve stories: “The Little Girl”, “New Dresses”, “Prelude”, “At the Bay”, “Sixpence”, “Sun and Moon”, “The Doll’s House”, “The Wind Blows”, “The Garden Party”, “Her First Ball”, “An Ideal Family” and “The Daughters of the Late Colonel”.
</dc:description>
