However, biobank-specific standards such as ISO 20387:2018 have been infrequently implemented. This study aimed to develop a practical implementation roadmap to assist ISO 9001:2015-certified biobanks in adopting ISO 20387:2018.</p>Methods<p>The implementation roadmap was developed through a scientific literature review and a comparative, clause-level analysis (crosswalk) of ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 20387:2018. The analysis identified areas of overlap between the standards and requirements specific to ISO 20387:2018.</p>Results<p>The crosswalk demonstrated substantial overlap between the two standards while identifying additional ISO 20387:2018 requirements related to financial viability assessment, plans for future expansion, additional specimen-collection standards, authentication protocols, and reporting requirements. Based on these findings, we developed a practical, time-bound implementation framework that leverages existing ISO 9001:2015 systems to help structure the transition to ISO 20387:2018. The proposed roadmap can be completed within an estimated 17-20 weeks.</p>Discussion/Conclusion<p>The implementation framework provides a structured approach for ISO 9001:2015-certified biobanks seeking to adopt ISO 20387:2018 and may help make accreditation more attainable for resource-constrained biobanks. We identify testable assumptions about feasibility, duration, and organizational benefits, and highlight the need for formal training in biobank management to sustain implementation.
