<dc:description><p>Direct evaporative cooling is an ancient cooling technique which has remained relevant, especially for cooling in climatic conditions with medium-to-low humidity levels. This paper explores the potential of using solar-powered direct evaporative coolers in Kenya's Nairobi area by evaluating their performance. The study examined an evaporative cooling system employing water as a refrigerant. Water is used to wet a cooling pad, CELdek® 7090-15. An air fan with a capacity to supply air across the pad at the rate of 2000 cubic metres per hour (m3/hr) is used to supply hot and dry outdoor air across the cooling pad. Investigated performance parameters included ambient air temperature drop at different points of the cooler from intake to the target room ambience. The study also investigated other parameters, such as relative humidity, cooling efficiency and cooling capacity. The results indicated the cooling effect on the warm dry air with a temperature drop averaging at 2.71°C. The system enhanced target room ambience moisture providing a relative humidity of above 80% with the cooling efficiency and cooling capacity averaging at 53% and 17.74 kW, respectively.</p></dc:description>
