<dc:description><p dir="ltr">The ever-increasing anthropogenic CO2 emissions have led to an imbalance in the global carbon cycle. This has resulted in numerous climatic impacts globally, that has called for measures to mitigate these impacts. Carbon capture and storage has proven to be a potential long-term strategy in managing rise in CO2 concentrations. This research investigates the potentials of volcanic rocks, basalt, as a potential carbon storage. It expounds on different textures in basalts and their influence in mineral carbonation rates. To achieve this, the research will use batch reactor experiments where basalt rock is subjected to CO2 rich water at high temperatures and pressure conditions to simulate basalt reservoir conditions. Water samples from the reactor vessel will be sampled to monitor variation in the chemistry with respect to time. From this we will be able to calculate the rates at which dissolution of basalt minerals and precipitation of carbonates occurs. </p></dc:description>
