<dc:description>Drawing on role theory, this study proposes that the within-role difference between CEO versus CFO power—the difference in power relative to that expected for their role—can provide insights into investors’ reactions to CEO versus CFO dismissal following signalled financial misconduct. Using an event study of 743 CEO and CFO dismissals in U.S. firms from 2005 to 2021, we find that investors react more positively to CEO dismissal when CEO within-role power is higher than CFO within-role power, and more positively to CFO dismissal when the reverse holds. The finding contributes to research on executive dismissal, upper echelons theory, and role theory.</dc:description>
