<dc:description>
An understanding of patterns of microplastic loss and sedimentation is important for identifying microplastic hotspots and their evolution. Here we show accumulation of microplastics in an anthropogenically impacted glacier-valley-fjord system in Svalbard, Norway. Microplastics were found in the snowpack overlying the glaciers (1.2 ± 1.6 n L-1), inside an englacial meltwater channel (125.9 ± (-) n L-1), and in end moraine (9.6 ± (-) n Kg-1) and fjord sediment (38.7 ± 11.1 n Kg-1). Microplastic fragments dominated the supraglacial snowpack and marine sediment, while fibres dominated the englacial meltwater channel and moraine. Microplastics were not observed in riparian and coastal environments above the limit of detection. Pooling samples across compartments overcame observed microplastic patchiness. Microplastic supply, environmental energy regimes, and natural sedimentation rates appear to be important factors in determining zones of heightened microplastic concentration. Contextualization of landscape histories is therefore needed to link microplastic observations to general pollution trends.
</dc:description>
