<dc:description>
Supplementary files for article "Teaching data analysis with AI assistance: evidence from a political science class"

Many instructors recognise that generative artificial intelligence (AI) can be a valuable tool, yet guidance on how they might integrate these tools into their teaching is still in its nascent stages. This article lays out one potential approach to using generative AI in the classroom, focussed on improving data literacy among political science students. It then assesses the impact of that teaching intervention on students using an analysis of (1) pre- and post-intervention (preregistered) survey data and (2) data from post-intervention focus group discussions. Results suggest that the intervention improved student confidence in using generative AI and provide weaker, suggestive evidence that it may have increased student capacity to select strong prompts. We find no evidence, by contrast, that the intervention affected student interest in using generative AI or their understanding of ethical considerations. Findings from the focus groups, in turn, suggest that students see generative AI as a potentially valuable tool for learning data analysis, though they raised concerns about its reliability, the risks of becoming dependent on the technology, and the danger of inadvertently violating university misconduct policies. Students were thus alive to many of the concerns around generative AI that are raised in the literature.

© The Author(s), CC BY 4.0
</dc:description>
