<p dir="ltr">This MS Excel spreadsheet contains tobacco related policies (laws, regulations) in India since the beguning of the 20<sup>th</sup> Century. It lists a total of 72 policies over a period of 1918-2024. These policies pertain to wide ranging tobacco related concerns excluding excise and tax related policies. The dataset provides name and various attributes of such policies including the year of enactment, type of regulatory instrument, policy issuing authority, geographical scope and a short description of the main provisions in these policies. </p><p dir="ltr">This dataset was produced as part of a review conducted under the broader DRITHI (Developing Research and action capacity in India To counter Harm Industries) project aimed at mapping policy trajectories of psychoactive substances in India since the time they were industrially produced. The policies in this dataset were identified by searching Casemine (a legal research platform) using the terms <i>tobacco, cigarette</i> and <i>bidi</i>, reflecting terminology commonly used in Indian legal sources. Additional materials, including manuals and codes of the British Indian presidencies, were obtained through targeted internet searches. </p><p dir="ltr">Our sole intention of publishing this dataset is that it may be of help to other researchers/actors interested in tobacco related policy/issues in India.
