<dc:description><p dir="ltr">Digital platforms, generative artificial intelligence (AI), and hybrid teaching increasingly shape language education, yet their integration into everyday practice in China’s commercial shadow-education sector remains underexamined. This ethnographic study examines AI-supported, video-conferencing-based hybrid-synchronous teaching at a private English-as-a-foreign-language institute in Shenzhen. Fieldwork from March to September 2026 combined participant observation, fieldnotes, digital and documentary materials, and semi-structured interviews with ten staff members. Data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis informed by a socio-technical orientation. Findings indicate that Tencent Meeting functioned as an ongoing pedagogical infrastructure, supporting flexible attendance and commercial benefits for the institute. AI supported teaching through three interrelated processes: automation of recording, transcription, summarisation, and preliminary scoring; augmentation of materials preparation, language consultation, feedback, and self-study; and orchestration of people, data, and activities across physical and virtual settings. These practices also involved fragmented infrastructures, unequal participation, increased coordination demands, and AI feedback requiring teacher verification and contextualisation. The study highlights how pedagogical and commercial priorities shape hybrid and AI-supported teaching in high-stakes language education. It suggests that platform development should prioritise pedagogical integration and ethical governance while supporting teachers’ professional judgement and relational work.</p></dc:description>
