This project took place between September 2025 and July 2026. It was funded by a York St John University Institute for Social Justice Community Research Grant.</p><p dir="ltr">The project was led by Kay Louise Aldred (originally Neurodiverse Connection, later independent researcher) and Dr. Amy Skinner (YSJU). The project was initially co-produced with the CIC Neurodiverse Connection.</p><p dir="ltr"><b>Building neurodivergent-affirming cultures of regulation</b> was a creative research project about the ways people, relationships and environments can support emotional and nervous system regulation for neurodivergent people.</p><p dir="ltr">The project had two aims:</p><p dir="ltr">· To understand how neurodivergent adults experience regulation and dysregulation, especially in places where there are differences in power, such as healthcare, education and workplaces.</p><p dir="ltr">· To explore what neurodivergent cultures of regulation look and feel like, and how they can be created.</p><p dir="ltr">To do this, we formed a Neurodivergent Creative Research Community (NCRC). This was a community of 12 neurodivergent adults, including the two project leads and 10 community researchers. Everyone in the community was a co-researcher on the project. Our aim was to explore neurodivergent cultures of regulation through a combination of discussion and practical experimentation. Over nine months, we met regularly and used creative activities, discussion and reflection to explore our experiences and develop ideas together.
