Multidimensional Transnational Gentrification Index for the Porto Metropolitan Area (Portugal) Henrique Telo Alves (25095425) José Pedro Silva (25095430) Ana Isabel Ribeiro (5769134) Health geography Social geography Urban geography Gentrification Index gentrification Touristification Portugal Porto Neighbourhood Change
This dataset provides the Transnational Gentrification Index (TGI) developed for the Porto Metropolitan Area, Portugal, for the 2011–2021 intercensal period, during which the metropolitan area experienced substantial transnational gentrification. The index was developed at the census block group level using harmonised data from the 2011 and 2021 Portuguese Censuses combined with tourism-related indicators.

The development and validation of the index are described in detail in the associated article, “Mapping Transnational Gentrification in the Porto Metropolitan Area (Portugal): Development and Validation of a Multidimensional Index”, published in Urban Science in 2026.

Briefly, the TGI was constructed using principal component analysis (PCA) and comprises 16 demographic, socioeconomic, housing, and tourism-related variables capturing both baseline conditions and changes between 2011 and 2021. The resulting standardised index provides a continuous measure of the intensity of transnational gentrification across the 1,443 census block groups of the Porto Metropolitan Area.

If you use the index or associated data in your research, please ensure that you cite the original publication: Alves, H.
