<dc:title>[DATASET] Testing Regiella insecticola effects on chemical and entomopathogen tolerance across two aphid species</dc:title>

          <dc:description>
Candidatus Regiella insecticola is a facultative endosymbiont in aphids, known for its effects on parasitoid protection, virus transmission and entomopathogen effects in several species, and the infection may have applications in aphid pest management. However, this will depend on Regiella being integrated into current control strategies. We therefore investigated the effects of a Regiella strain on chemical and entomopathogen tolerance across two species, Myzus persicae (Sulzer) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) and Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), focusing on an uninfected and transinfected strain of R. padi with Regiella, and a naturally infected strain of M. persicae coupled with its cured strain. We consider three insecticides registered in Australia for aphid control – pirimicarb (carbamate), dimethoate (organophosphate) and imidacloprid (neonicotinoid) – along with effects of the generalist entomopathogen, Beauveria bassiana. There was no effect of Regiella on tolerance to the three pesticides in either species. Species differences in response to the entomopathogen were found, with M. persicae having a sharper increase in mortality at day 14 of exposure, and R. padi showing a more gradual response. Mortality was mostly not influenced by the endosymbiont. Fecundity was decreased by entomopathogen exposure particularly at the highest concentration of 100,000,000 spores/mL in both species, and this effect persisted in M. persicae across an untreated generation. These results suggest that attempts to use Regiella within the context of pest control may not interfere much with traditional chemical or novel entomopathogen control approaches.
</dc:description>
