<dc:description><p dir="ltr">This study evaluated whether an inert commercial feed can replace Artemia nauplii during the initial feeding of tambaqui larvae in an intensive larviculture system. Larvae were assigned to three feeding protocols: exclusive Artemia (A), mixed feeding with Artemia and Vitellus (AV), and exclusive Vitellus (V). During the first eight days of exogenous feeding, larvae were fed according to treatment, followed by six days of co-feeding with a commercial micro-extruded diet. The trial ended after 15 days of exclusive feeding with the commercial diet. At the end of the co-feeding period, larvae fed exclusively with Vitellus had lower weight (0.022 g) than those fed A (0.044 g) or AV (0.037 g; p < 0.05), whereas survival was unaffected by feeding protocol. After 15 days on the commercial diet, no differences in growth were observed among treatments, indicating compensatory growth. Muscle fiber diameter distribution was also similar across groups, and the histological patterns of the liver and intestine were comparable. Replacing Artemia with Vitellus reduced feeding costs by 5.9% in AV and 22.6% in V compared with A; when labor associated with Artemia preparation was included, the reductions reached 41% and 84%, respectively. These results indicate that Artemia can be partially or fully replaced by Vitellus during the initial feeding of tambaqui larvae without compromising survival or final growth, potentially improving production efficiency, although validation under commercial conditions is still required.</p></dc:description>
