<dc:description>This data publication includes earlywood, latewood, and whole ring width measurements (1866-2016) of northern red oak (Quercus rubra L.) increment cores collected from 11 plots across western valleys of Vermont. Tree cores were collected from 213 trees in 2015-2016 for a total of 430 cores. This data package includes a separate file for each of the earlywood, latewood, and whole ring measurements as well as files containing additional plot details (e.g., location and elevation) and information for trees measured (e.g., diameter at breast height and whether tree is dominant or codominant).<br>The purpose of this study was to explore the influence of historical climate metrics (temperature and precipitation) and atmospheric deposition on the growth of dominant and co-dominant northern red oak trees growing in hardwood forests of Vermont. Under current environmental projections, suitable habitat for northern red oak is expected to slightly expand in northern hardwood forests including Vermont (USDA Forest Service Climate Change Tree Atlas). A better understanding of past growth-climate relations of northern red oak will help inform current and future forest management practices.<br>The increment cores are currently archived in Room 166 at the Northern Research Station, 705 Spear Street, South Burlington, VT.
