<dc:description><p>Agricultural geographical indication (AGI) certification is promoted as a market-based instrument for place-based food systems, yet whether it protects the agricultural land base remains contested. Because county cropland area is the quantity on which grain production capacity is calculated, whether certification changes that quantity is a first-order policy question. This study estimates the effect of a county’s first AGI certification on cropland area using a panel of Chinese counties, remotely sensed land-cover data, and a multi-period difference-in-differences design. The outcome measures current cropland area relative to a county-specific historical average and therefore captures land-cover quantity rather than land quality. Because certification is granted in different years across counties, a heterogeneity-robust group-time estimator serves as the primary specification and conventional two-way fixed effects provide the benchmark. The benchmark model returns a positive and significant association, whereas the group-time estimator returns a positive but statistically imprecise average effect. A decomposition shows that most of the benchmark coefficient rests on comparisons between counties certified in different years. Excluding the earliest certified cohort leaves the average effect unchanged and reveals a positive dynamic response that emerges only after several years. Agricultural labor productivity transmits a small share of the association, whereas agricultural service output intensity is not robust once the sample is held constant. The choice of estimand therefore determines whether certification appears to protect cropland.</p></dc:description>
