<dc:title>Contrasting Geometric Feedback Between Two Branches of a Single Japanese Yew (Taxus cuspidata): Annual-Ring Geometry Dataset</dc:title>

          <dc:description>
This dataset provides a proof-of-concept analysis of successive annual-ring geometry in two branches of a single Japanese yew (Taxus cuspidata) from Morioka, Iwate, Japan. The tree divided into two branches approximately 110 cm and 210 cm in length. One cross-section from the 110 cm branch and two cross-sections from the 210 cm branch were manually traced to reconstruct 360° radial profiles of successive annual rings.

The dataset tests whether pre-existing cross-sectional geometry predicts the spatial allocation of radial growth in the subsequent annual ring. For each ring transition, local deviation of the current radius from its circumferential mean was compared with local next-ring growth. Negative correlations represent compensation-like geometric feedback, whereas positive correlations represent reinforcement-like feedback.

The two branches showed contrasting patterns: the 110 cm branch predominantly exhibited positive, reinforcement-like feedback, whereas the 210 cm branch showed a more negative, compensation-like pattern. The dataset includes raw manual annotation points, reconstructed radial profiles, transition-level and angle-level measurements, statistical analyses, rotation/mirroring invariance checks, branch-classification analyses, publication-ready figures, metadata, and reproducible Python code.

All samples originate from a single individual, and the two 210 cm cross-sections are not independent biological replicates. The dataset therefore represents an exploratory single-tree proof of concept rather than population-level evidence. The observed relationships describe geometric growth patterns and do not by themselves demonstrate cognition, awareness, or a specific physiological mechanism.
</dc:description>
