<dc:description>
This dataset is part of the data collection ZIN-IN-NGT-animations (https://doi.org/10.21942/uva.c.8723797).

About the content of the data collection

ZIN-IN-NGT-animations is a data collection containing 3D animations of 4,083 sentences in Sign Language of the Netherlands (NGT). These are sentences that are frequently used in the interaction between parents and young children.

The name of the data collection, ZIN in NGT, can be translated from Dutch to English either as ‘SENTENCE in NGT’ or ‘APPETITE for NGT’.

The present data collection is a companion to the ZIN-IN-NGT-videos data collection (DOI 10.21942/uva.c.8558478), which contains video recordings of the same sentences. To obtain 3D animations, signers watched the video recording of each sentence and then re-performed the same sentence in a motion capture studio.

The name of each file includes the name of the original video recording (e.g. M20241216_5634, which includes the video recording date in YYYYMMDD format and a recording ID). This is extended with the motion capture session date in YYMMDD format and the take number, e.g. M20241216_5634_260319_3.fbx. Only the last take of each sentence is included in the data collection. mocap_mapping.csv in ZNNM_codebook lists all takes and links them to the video collection Zin-IN-NGT-videos (DOI 10.21942/uva.c.8558478).

The collection contains, for each sentence, the raw Shogun motion capture data (ZNNM_shogun), the Vicon-solved skeleton data (ZNNM_vicon), the retargeted Character Creator animation (ZNNM_cc), the post-processed version of the retargeted CC animation (ZNNM_cc_pp), and the annotations (ZNNM_annotation). The data collection also includes a codebook with the take mapping (ZNNM_codebook).

About the creation of the data collection

This data collection has been created through a collaboration between UvA’s SignLab (www.signlab-amsterdam.nl) and TYD (www.tyd.nl). All 3D animations have been created using SignLab’s motion capture setup at UvA’s Visualisation Lab in 2024-2026. We are currently writing a paper describing in more detail how the data collection was created. A link to the paper will be added here once the paper is published.

License

All data is shared under a CC-BY 4.0 license.

Funding

The creation of this data collection has been supported by ZonMW, NWO, Stichting Handgebaar, Stichting Vrienden van Effatha, and by the University of Amsterdam through the research programme Language Sciences for Social Good.

Related data collection

A related data collection, ZIN-IN-NGT-videos (https://doi.org/10.21942/uva.c.8558478), contains multi-view video recordings of all sentences in the current data collection.

About this dataset

ZIN-IN-NGT-animations is the motion-capture companion of the Zin in NGT (ZNN) corpus: 4,083 sentence recordings in Sign Language of the Netherlands (NGT) from Signlab (University of Amsterdam / Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences). Signers re-performed the sentences in a Vicon motion-capture suit; every file is named after the original recording (m_base, e.g. M20241216_1234), the capture session (YYMMDD) and the take number, e.g. M20241216_1234_260319_3.fbx. Only the latest take per recording per session is included. mocap_mapping.csv in ZNNM_codebook lists all takes and links them to the video collection 'ZIN-IN-NGT-videos' (DOI 10.21942/uva.c.8558478). Character Creator animations, FBX and GLB per take (retargeted mocap on the CC avatar), for the capture session in the title.
</dc:description>
