<dc:description>Introduction
Gossip is a fundamental aspect of human communication that facilitates the expression of attitudes, beliefs, and opinions related to emotions. Within organizational settings, gossip frequently pertains to third parties who are not physically present and can be classified as either positive or negative based on its valence. This study focuses on positive gossip, specifically how it is perceived and experienced by employees as an organizational phenomenon.
Methods
The study employed a phenomenological approach, with data collected through in-depth interviews conducted in two distinct organizational contexts in Türkiye.
Results
The findings reveal that positive gossip is a significant phenomenon that can shape organizational dynamics, contributing to motivation, enhanced communication, and a positive workplace climate. However, the results also indicate that when exaggerated, positive gossip may lead to unintended negative outcomes, such as jealousy, perceptions of favoritism, and even potential misuse of power by those being praised.
Discussion
This study contributes to the extant literature on organizational communication by offering a comprehensive analysis of the origins, content, circulation patterns, expectations of privacy, and dual impact of positive gossip on individuals and organizations. These insights underscore the necessity for a nuanced understanding of positive gossip, which is complex and multifaceted in nature.
</dc:description>
