<dc:description>
Salmonid fishes harbour diverse urinary and biliary myxozoans, but the identities of several historically reported Sphaerospora and Myxidium infections remain uncertain because morphology, tissue localization, and molecular data have not always been provided in a cohesive diagnosis. We re-examined selected salmonid myxozoan infections using combined morphological and SSU rDNA sequence data, focusing on incongruous sequence evidence assigned to Sphaerospora oncorhynchi and Sphaerospora elwhaiensis. We generated new sequences of both species, which clustered within Sphaerospora sensu stricto with other renal sphaerosporids from salmonids, confirming their generic placement. In contrast, the previously published S. oncorhynchi sequence grouped with Myxidium isolates in the Myxidium lieberkuehni (Myxidium sensu stricto) clade, whereas the published S. elwhaiensis sequence clustered within the hepatic biliary clade, indicating that both records likely originated from co-infecting myxidiids. Additional sequencing of salmonid kidney-derived myxidiids revealed two morphologically and phylogenetically distinct lineages within the Myxidium sensu stricto clade. A shorter, stouter morphotype was consistent with M. minteri-like infections, whereas a more elongate morphotype with pointed spore ends corresponded to M. salvelini-like infections. The latter lineage included both the previously published sequence assigned to S. oncorhynchi and the CKX parasite associated with proliferative renal myxosporidiosis in coho salmon, supporting the interpretation of CKX as a likely proliferative stage of an M. salvelini-like parasite. Gallbladder infections from coho salmon were identified as Myxidium truttae. These results demonstrate that mixed infections can cause erroneous sequence assignments and that phylogenetic context is important to consider, particularly if in conflict with well-supported clades.

</dc:description>
