The data were collected on the Kondoa Plateau, Samara Karoo Reserve, South Africa, and include measurements from red grass (<i>Themeda triandra</i>) tussock patches and <i>Cynodon dactylon</i> grazing lawns. Variables include soil organic carbon concentration and stocks, bulk density, soil moisture, clay content, belowground biomass, plant species count, pH and elevation.
