<dc:description>
Background/objectives:The use of healthcare services is influenced by cultural differences and migration experiences. Palliative care, as a component of healthcare services, warrants further exploration. Previous research has tended to focus more on the use of hospice care, whilst comprehensive studies examining the use of generalist and specialist palliative care among ethnic minority groups have been scarce. Consequently, this study compares and analyses the use of generalist and specialist palliative care services among ethnic Chinese and New Zealand Europeans at the end of life.

Methods:This study conducted a descriptive analysis to compare the demographic and clinical characteristics of different ethnic groups. Chi-square tests and logistic regression were used to analyze the relationship between ethnicity and variables. Finally, multinomial logistic regression was used to analyze the relationship between ethnicity and health service utilization, and a multivariate regression model was constructed.

Results:This study found that, in the use of generalist palliative care, the Chinese ethnic group preferred to use hospital services, whilst there were no ethnic differences in the use of community services. In the use of specialist palliative care, although the Chinese ethnic group received more hospice referrals, there were still differences in their use of hospice services. There was no difference between the Chinese and New Zealand Europeans in the use of hospice inpatient admissions. However, the Chinese people utilized hospice community care services to a lesser extent than New Zealand Europeans.

Conclusion:This study examined the use of generalist and specialist palliative care services among the Chinese ethnicity in New Zealand. The study found that Chinese ethnicity has different preferences regarding the use of palliative care services. Further research is needed to explore the expectations of the Chinese ethnicity regarding palliative care services.
</dc:description>
