<dc:description>
A Chinese migrant father sits in a wheelchair in a New Zealand hospital corridor, facing the cold light of the ward. Behind him, an adult child looks back towards a doorway that opens onto a familiar home: a warm lamp, a family photograph, a red couplet wishing good fortune. The wheelchair rests on the line where the two floors meet. Nobody has moved. Not yet.

My PhD explores how Chinese migrant patients with cancer and their families in New Zealand make decisions about palliative care. These decisions are rarely made by one person at one moment. They unfold through conversations: within families, between patients and their families, and between families and health professionals. They are shaped by cultural values about filial duty and protecting loved ones, by who in the family is expected to speak, and by the distance migration has placed between old expectations and a new health system. This image asks what a family sees from that threshold, and whether everyone is looking the same way.
</dc:description>
