<dc:description>
Psychiatric rehabilitation supports recovery and community reintegration among individuals with schizophrenia, but persistent stigma, impaired social functioning, and disrupted self-identity can hinder psychosocial recovery after rehabilitation, particularly within collectivist socio-cultural environments. This study explored the lived experiences of psychosocial recovery among individuals with schizophrenia following psychiatric rehabilitation in Indonesia. A Husserlian descriptive phenomenological design was used. Twenty individuals with schizophrenia who had completed psychiatric rehabilitation and lived in the community for at least 6 months participated in semi-structured in-depth interviews. Participants were recruited purposively from an outpatient psychiatric clinic in Indonesia, and data were analyzed using Colaizzi’s phenomenological method. Four interconnected themes emerged: stigma and disrupted social identity; rebuilding the self through adaptive coping and behavioral regulation; relational recovery through family and community acceptance; and reconstructing meaning and future orientation. Psychosocial recovery was experienced as a dynamic and nonlinear process shaped by stigma, emotional regulation, family support, spirituality, social acceptance, and future aspirations. Mental health nurses should strengthen culturally responsive, family-centered, and community-based interventions that support identity reconstruction, social participation, and long-term psychosocial recovery.

Mental health nurses should develop culturally responsive, family-centered, and community-based interventions that strengthen identity reconstruction, emotional regulation, social participation, and long-term psychosocial recovery among individuals with schizophrenia.

What is known on the subject?

Individuals with schizophrenia frequently experience psychosocial difficulties after psychiatric rehabilitation.

Social stigma and community rejection may hinder sustainable psychosocial recovery and community reintegration.

Individuals with schizophrenia frequently experience psychosocial difficulties after psychiatric rehabilitation.

Social stigma and community rejection may hinder sustainable psychosocial recovery and community reintegration.

What this paper adds to existing knowledge?

Psychosocial recovery following psychiatric rehabilitation involved identity reconstruction, relational recovery, and restoration of social legitimacy within collectivist socio-cultural contexts.

The findings highlight that family acceptance, community inclusion, spirituality, and meaningful social roles are central to sustainable psychosocial recovery among individuals with schizophrenia in Indonesia.

What are the implications for practice?

Mental health nurses should strengthen culturally responsive, family-centered, and community-based recovery interventions.

Recovery-oriented nursing interventions should incorporate stigma reduction, identity reconstruction, and community participation strategies.

Mental health nurses should strengthen culturally responsive, family-centered, and community-based recovery interventions.

Recovery-oriented nursing interventions should incorporate stigma reduction, identity reconstruction, and community participation strategies.

This study provides a culturally grounded understanding of psychosocial recovery among individuals with schizophrenia following psychiatric rehabilitation in Indonesia. The findings highlight that stigma reduction, identity reconstruction, relational recovery, family support, and community acceptance are essential components of sustainable recovery. Mental health nurses should strengthen recovery-oriented, family-centered, and community-based interventions that support emotional regulation, meaningful social roles, social participation, and long-term community reintegration among individuals with schizophrenia within collectivist socio-cultural settings.
</dc:description>
