The loci are also shown to be useful in applications to other crane species such as identification of species, hybrids, populations and individuals and comparison of their genetic diversity using a standardized set of markers. Crane species from other genera, <i>Grus</i> and <i>Antigone, </i>with no species-specific SSR loci available, were chosen to test the cross-amplification abilities. For ease of use, the developed primers were organized into three multiplex panels targeting loci located on different chromosomes. Locus testing was performed on individual blood and feather samples from the collection of the Laboratory of Population Genetics of Vavilov Institute of General Genetics.
