<dc:description><p>Research training is a long, complicated, and idiosyncratic process, impacted by the nature of each research project, individual trainee characteristics, and factors in the research training environment. Consequently, designing effective research training programs is challenging. To address this challenge, we adapted Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems Theory to create a Research Training Ecosystem Model (RTEM) that incorporates factors that impact research trainee growth and development as identified in the published literature. Research training program directors can use the RTEM to identify and map their unique research training ecosystem, then use their map to develop and iteratively revise learning opportunities in their program that leverage the positive impacts and mitigate the negative impacts of individual characteristics and environmental factors.</p></dc:description>
