<dc:description>
This file contains the datasheet used in the experiment to test the role of Pupal colour on desiccation tolerance in butterflies. Data include pupal images and life-history data for butterflies, such as weight, survival, and pupal colour. Additionally, it contains R code used for analysing the data. Each sheet (CSV or XLSX) contains the column name “Description”, which contains information about each variable.

Brief summary of the study

We demonstrate that brown pupae have melanin in their cuticles. Under desiccating conditions, the melanised brown pupae, had a higher probability of eclosion than did lighter, green pupae. However, pupal colour did not provide any survival advantage under non-desiccating conditions. Our data show that desiccation stress is stronger on off-leaf microhabitats than under leaves. Because brown pupae tend to form on off-leaf substrates, pupal colour plasticity is likely an adaptation against desiccation. Water loss was inversely correlated with survival. Surprisingly, there was no correlation between melanisation and water loss, suggesting that pupal colour may confer tolerance to desiccation by mechanisms other than water loss, and highlighting the complexity of the relationship between melanisation, water retention and survival.

</dc:description>
