<dc:description>We report extraordinarily large magnetic hysteresis loops in the iridates Sr3NiIrO5 and Sr3CoIrO6. We find coercive magnetic fields of up to 55 T with switched magnetic moments ⇡ µB per formula unit in Sr3NiIrO6 and coercive fields of up to 52 T with switched moments ⇡ 3µB per formula unit in Sr3CoIrO6. We propose that the magnetic hysteresis involves the field-induced evolution of quasione-dimensional chains in a frustrated triangular configuration. The striking magnetic behaviour is likely to be linked to the unusual spin-orbit-entangled local state of the Ir4+ ion and its potential for anisotropic exchange interactions.<br><br>Data are used to make Figures 5(b) and (d). The mass of the sample is 270 mg. Data files are labelled by temperature in kelvin and by the labels cool, cool2, cool3 and cool4 according to the history of the sample as follows: a) Cooled from 300 K to 2 K in 100 Oe. b) Warmed to 120 K in zero applied field. c) Field sweeps 0 to 7 T and back to 0 T in 0.5 T steps, at 120, 100, 78, 72, 50, 38, 32, 26, 20, 16, 12, 8, 4 and 2 K (labelled "cool"). d) Warmed to 120 K. e) Field sweeps 0 - 7 - 0 T, 0.5 T steps, at 36, 30, 24, 22, 18, 14, 10, 6 and 3 K (labelled "cool2"). f) Warmed to 120 K. g) Field sweep 0 - 7 T, 0.1 T steps, at 35 K (labelled "cool 3"). h) Warmed to 120 K. i) Field sweeps 0 - 7 T, 0.1 T steps, at 39, 37 and 33 K (labelled "cool 4"). Columns are: 1) Applied field in oersted 2) Sample temperature in kelvin 3) Sample moment in emu</dc:description>
