<dc:description><p dir="ltr">This research examines the cross-cultural communication aspect through the understanding of emotional expression and its interpretation from Chinese cultural norms and psycholinguistic factors. Questionnaires and qualitative interviews were used to collect data that were later analyzed using a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design in Shanghai, China. The quantitative analysis of the 290 Chinese and 243 non-Chinese participants was done using SPSS, while the qualitative analysis of the 106 interviews was conducted using NVivo thematic analysis. The multiple linear regression analysis showed that the accuracy of cross-cultural emotional interpretation was significantly negatively correlated with Chinese indirect emotional expressions (β= -0.164, p<0.001), high-context communication (β= -0.152, p<0.001), cultural display rules (β= -0.163, p<0.001), Sapir-Whorf linguistic influence (β= -0.222, p<0.001), and emotional restraint (β= -0.157, p<0.001). The overall regression model explained 14.7% of the variance in the interpretation of emotions across the cultures (R²= 0.147, F-value= 18.225). These results offer a systematic psycholinguistic and intercultural analysis of factors influencing emotional understanding during interpersonal communication between Chinese and non-Chinese, and provide empirical evidence to help explain the structural barriers to intercultural emotional communication.</p></dc:description>
