<dc:description>
This dataset contains field survey and meta-analysis data on microbial dormancy and soil multifunctionality in arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM)- and ectomycorrhizal (ECM)-associated forest rhizosphere soils. The field survey dataset includes 207 rhizosphere soil samples collected from 61 tree species across eight forest sites in China between June and August 2023, comprising 126 AM-associated and 81 ECM-associated samples. The proportions of active and dead microbial cells were determined using 5-cyano-2,3-ditolyl tetrazolium chloride (CTC) and propidium iodide (PI) staining coupled with flow cytometry, and the dormant microbial fraction was subsequently quantified.

Soil multifunctionality was calculated as the mean of min–max-normalized values for 13 indicators representing four functional categories: soil carbon sequestration, soil fertility, microbial habitat, and microbial decomposition. The workbook also includes a global meta-analysis dataset containing 217 observations from 45 studies published before 1 August 2026. The meta-analysis records study information, mycorrhizal type, geographic coordinates, tree species, and soil multifunctionality. The field survey and meta-analysis data are provided in Sheet1 and Sheet2, respectively.
</dc:description>
