<dc:description>This paper summarizes the proceedings of a workshop held to exchange approaches, experiences, and perspectives about preventing the destruction of fragile environments in the Great Lakes region, with a particular focus on the areas affected by Rwandan refugees. Discussion at the workshop covered threats to fragile habitats, technical solutions, and long-term solutions. All throughout, emphasis was placed on the interplay between ecological dynamics, basic human needs of refugees, cultural beliefs, and natural resource management.</dc:description>
