<dc:description>This document looks at the relationships between HIV/AIDS and nutrition. It states that HIV infection exacerbates malnutrition through attacks on the immune system and its impact on nutrient intake, absorption and utilization. Malnutrition increases fatigue and decreases work productivity of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHAs). The authors describe the processes that lead to weight loss among PLWHAs. They provide examples of a number of nutritional programmes and research evidence that suggests that weight maintenance can be effective in the initial stages of infection. Nutritional care and support mechanisms are described and programme guidelines outlined for the groups of PLWHAs in Africa.</dc:description>
