<dc:description>Discourse theory implies that it is not sufficient to view language as something neutral or objective. Language should rather be seen to represent a certain perspective and aim. Michel Foucault claims in his theoretical elaborations on discourse, that a social and political context affects language and that language on the other hand shapes and constructs realities. Essential and entangled in this process of construction is power. This paper uses these theorisations to look at how the UK Government describes its policy on detention of asylum seekers and how this policy is practised. The analysis is related to a framework of 'humane deterrence', which contains the logic of how states can discourage people from migrating.</dc:description>
