<dc:description>This paper discusses certain mechanisms of exclusion practiced by a number of European states and the costs associated with them, before posing a question that is being raised more and more across Europe – what price are we prepared to pay to maintain our borders? The mechanisms of exclusion addressed are deportation, detention and dispersal. Although ... [these mechanisms of exclusion] have formed an occasional part of the migration regimes of European countries throughout the twentieth century, they tended to be used in response to particular events or 'crises'. However, they have not become 'normalised', 'essential' instruments in the ongoing attempt to control or manage immigration in European states. In this paper, it is suggested that it is the pursuit of control that is itself the problem for contemporary societies.</dc:description>
