<dc:description>
Unger-Wallace and co-workers found that alleles of the maize p1 gene for kernel color containing Ac/fAc transposable elements flanking a p1 transcriptional enhancer can induce paramutation, a type of epigenetic silencing. The authors identified DNA circle junctions derived from eccDNA (extrachromosomal circular DNA) produced by aberrant transposition reactions, and they propose that these eccDNA trigger paramutation. On the basis of these findings, the authors propose that Ac/fAc transposition reactions generate eccDNA containing the p1 enhancer, and that transcription of the enhancer-containing eccDNA leads to sRNA accumulation and cytosine methylation of homologous sequences in the p1 gene, triggering p1 paramutation. This novel hypothesis suggests that eccDNA produced by aberrant transposition reactions can have significant impacts on gene expression.
</dc:description>
