This study used a qualitative, explorative, and descriptive design to explore the experiences of family members who avoid contact with mental health care users during hospital treatment at a tertiary hospital in Gauteng. Non-probability sampling was used to purposively sample 15 family members to conduct one-on-one semi-structured interviews. The interviews were transcribed and analysed using Braun and Clarke's six steps of thematic analysis.
