<dc:description>
Individual beta-maps will be made publicly available upon manuscript acceptance.

In this registered within-subject fMRI study (https://www.drks.de/search/de/trial/DRKS00027448/details), we examined both aversive and appetitive pain learning during acquisition and extinction in 68 healthy individuals. Ratings confirm successful learning, with exploratory analyses suggesting stronger aversive acquisition and incomplete extinction. Both conditions engage the visual cortex during acquisition, with increased connectivity to the right operculum. Aversive acquisition further elicits stronger mediodorsal thalamus activity and heightened connectivity with the locus coeruleus, alongside sustained parahippocampal activation during extinction. Incomplete aversive extinction is linked to ongoing visual cortex activity during pain anticipation. Findings suggest shared neural substrates, but stronger aversive recruitment of rapid encoding and persistent memory systems.
Details see https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2025.04.02.646781v1.full.pdf.
</dc:description>
