<dc:description>
Official Gene Sets are essential genome annotation resources for genome projects. They define annotations, which ascribe function to a genome; and declare the community-recognized annotation set for a genome assembly. Often, they integrate data curated by a genome database and/or community curators.

Venturia canescens is a parasitoid wasp that harbors a domesticated endogenous virus (DEV). The endogenous viral genes in the V. canescens genome produce virus-like particles (VLPs) that bind to wasp eggs and protect them from attack when they are injected into host insects. Automated annotation of insect genomes often fails to properly define and identify virus-derived genes, so this Official Gene Set includes manually annotated viral genes and genes encoding VLP-associated products and other wasp genes automatically annotated by NCBI.

The Venturia canescens Official Gene Set VenCane_OGSv1.0 is based on genome assembly ASM1945775v1 (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/datasets/genome/GCF_026212275.2/), and derives from the following datasets:

1. Manual annotations by Dr. Meng Mao and Dr. Gaelen Burke, University of Georgia, on genome assembly GCF_019457755.1.

2. NCBI Annotation Release GCF_019457755.1-RS_2024_07 from RefSeq's Eukaryotic Genome Annotation Pipeline v10.3 (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/refseq/annotation_euk/Venturia_canescens/GCF_019457755.1-RS_2024_07/)

USDA-ARS NAL staff used the gff3_merge program from the GFF3toolkit software package v2.1.0 (https://github.com/NAL-i5K/GFF3toolkit/releases/tag/v2.1.0) to merge the above datasets. Overlapping manual annotations replaced annotations from NCBI Annotation Release GCF_019457755.1-RS_2024_07. USDA-ARS NAL staff then performed QA/QC on the dataset and added metadata.

These datasets, and tools to interact with them, are also available at the i5k Workspace@NAL (https://i5k.nal.usda.gov). These annotations should facilitate continued research on Venturia canescens, an important biological control agent of stored product moth pests, via curated annotations on the improved, newer genome assembly.

</dc:description>
