<dc:description>
This dataset accompanies the article titles '“As miserable as a bandicoot”: 150 years of human-wildlife conflict with bandicoots in New South Wales, c1804 – 1954', published in Pacific Conservation Biology, volume 32, pages PC26059. This study aimed to explore the role of human-wildlife conflict in bandicoot decline in New South Wales. To find evidence of historical interactions between humans and bandicoots and historical perspectives, we searched the National Library of Australia'sTrove newspaper and gazette records for the words ‘bandicoot’ and ‘bandycoot’ (an early spelling) using general searches and bulk download. Articles printed from 1803 to 1955 were included, with the first article referencing bandicoots printed in 1804. Newspapers printed after 1955 are still under copyright and were not included in our analysis. The initial search retrieved 30,368 records, however with search exclusions, this reduced to 3129 records bulk downloaded. The bulk download was conducted on 10 April 2024; however sporadic searches were conducted until January 2026. Each record was then examined to confirm the article aligned with our exclusions, resulting in a final 983 records. This dataset includes a metadata spreadsheet and a spreadsheet including the final records included in the paper.
</dc:description>
