<dc:description>Delamination remains a critical threat to Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composites, primarily governed by Mode I fracture toughness. While traditionally viewed as a matrix dominated property, this study explores how fibre architecture and ply thickness interact to influence delamination resistance and the development of fibre bridging. Using Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) laminates, this research investigates the impact of interlaminar hybridisation. Through Micro-CT analysis, the project quantified how local crimp and undulation correlate with fracture toughness. Additionally, a Python-based computer vision tool was developed to determine crack opening displacements and fibre bridging laws. Cohesive Zone Modelling (CZM) was further employed to simulate unique strengthening mechanisms like ply bridging. The findings provide a discrete understanding of crack-path tortuosity, offering a pathway to design high-performance laminates with enhanced interlaminar resistance by leveraging the synergistic relationship between fibre and matrix.

Thesis is embargoed until 31 July 2027.</dc:description>
