<dc:description>Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive progressive neurological disorder affecting over 10 million people worldwide and is the lastest-growing fastest-growing neurological conditon. Despite increasing prevalence, public understanding remains limited, contributing to stigma and reduced quality of life. This study examined awareness and perceptions of PD in Ireland and explored the experiences of people with PD, carers, and professionals. A sequential explanatory mixed-methods design was used. Scoping and systematic reviews identified international evidence of poor knowledge and persistent stigma. Phase one comprised a national survey (n=796) assessing knowledge and attitudes. Phase two involved qualitative interviews with people with PD and carers (n=12) and healthcare professionals sionals (n=10). Findings showed good recognition of motor symptoms but limited limited understanding non-motor symptoms, causes, and treatments, with misconceptions common. Qualitative data highlighted experiences of stigma and social
withdrawal alongside empathy and openness to learning. The study demonstrates the need for targeted education to improve quality of life.

Thesis is embargoed until 31 July 2027.</dc:description>
