<dc:description>This thesis investigates the agronomic performance, soil health benefits, and environmental implications of municipal solid waste (MSW) compost and alternative phosphorus (P) fertilisers within sustainable nutrient management systems. It evaluates the potential of waste-derived materials to complement or substitute mineral fertilisers while maintaining crop productivity and improving long-term soil fertility.
Through a combination of laboratory, mesocosm, and field experiments, the research assessed the consistency, nutrient dynamics, and agronomic value of MSW compost and other recovered P sources under temperate conditions. Results demonstrate that these materials can sustain yields and enhance nutrient use efficiency when appropriately integrated with mineral fertilisers. The work also explores the role of carbon- and silica-based amendments in improving nutrient synchrony and reducing losses, offering further opportunities for circular nutrient management.

Overall, the findings highlight that waste-derived fertilisers can contribute to more sustainable and resource-efficient agricultural systems by improving soil quality, supporting nutrient recovery, and reducing dependence on finite mineral P resources.

Thesis is embargoed until 31 December 2027.</dc:description>
