<dc:description>Liquid crystals are a unique state of matter that combine the anisotropic properties of crystalline solids with the fluidity of liquids. Their molecular organisation is highly responsive to external stimuli, including electric and magnetic fields, temperature, and light. Over the past five decades, liquid crystals have become essential components of display technologies, driving the need for new materials with improved switching speeds, colour performance, and functionality. Bent-core mesogens represent a distinct class of liquid crystals characterised by a molecular bend, typically introduced through 1,3-disubstituted central units. With this bend angle comes new liquid crystal mesophases unique to these structures.

Thesis is embargoed until 31 July 2027.</dc:description>
