<dc:description>This thesis outlines a range of theoretical approaches to objects – thing theory, new materialism, Heidegger, Latour’s actor‑network theory to name a few – that have shaped discussions of objects and materiality. Yet what emerges across the chapters is that the Northern Irish poets examined here do not neatly conform to these frameworks. Instead, their work tests the usefulness of such theories, probing their limitations when brought into contact with Irish historical experience, linguistic self‑consciousness, and poetic form. Northern Irish poetry, as my readings will suggest, engages with materiality in ways more complex and sceptical than many theoretical models allow.

Thesis is embargoed until 31 July 2031.
</dc:description>
